Australia have been eliminated from the Billie Jean King Cup without even hitting a ball in their final match as the national team looks to next season to secure any circuit titles.
It is the first time in almost a decade that Australia has fallen short of the finals series at the tournament, with their fate in the tournament laying in the hands of team Colombia.
Having fallen short to a fierce Kazakhstan outfit on Thursday, Colombia needed to claim victory in bid to force a tiebreak situation on Saturday when they meet the Aussies.
World No.10 Elena Rybakina unveiled a 37-minute straight set win over Valentina Mediorreal, while teammate Yulia Putintseva defeated Yuliana Lizarazo 6-1, 6-2.
“I’m super happy to get the win and looking forward to the finals,” Rybakina said.
“We had great support and the president of our association was here, so really nice to be here all together.
“We were focusing of course on singles to get the wins… super happy to get them in such a competent way.”
A victory in the doubles would have no impact for the Colombians as they prepare to face team Australia in a dead rubber battle on Saturday at Pat Rafter Arena.
Australia were seeded fourth in the tournament this season but have yet to find an opportunity to lift the Billie Jean King Cup title as of yet.
The last time the green and gold featured in the final of the event was in 2022.
Australia also featured in the 2019 final against France before the tournament, formerly known as the Federation Cup, rebranded to the Billie Jean King Cup.
Colombia will join Australia in the play-off series in November where they will face a series of the best talent from the 2025 regional Group 1 events.
The winners of the play-off series will earn a spot in the 2026 qualification event for the Billie Jean King Cup.
Kazakhstan’s rivals in the quarter finals have yet to be sealed with the Netherlands, Poland and Czech Republic all still battling to claim one of the limited spots.
